For the very first time in the County of Northamptonshire, food hygiene inspection results are easily accessible to the public through an easy to understand star rating scheme via www.northantsfoodsafety.co.uk which supports the council's 'Scores on the Doors' initiative. 'Scores on the Doors' is a scheme which gives the public access to view the latest hygiene rating following a programmed food hygiene inspection carried out by the County Council's Food and Safety Team (Environmental Health).

The Website provides a full search facility for hte visitor who plans on visiting a venue which serves food to the public. Food business are allocated a star rating ranging from zero stars (very poor) to five stars (excellent) using information determined by environmental health practitioners during routine food hygiene inspections.

The assessment is based on:

• Hygiene and safety, including food handling practices/procedures and temperature control
• Structure, including cleanliness, layout, condition of structure, lighting, ventilation etc., and
• Confidence in management, taken from their record of compliance, technical knowledge and food safety management skills

The search facility tool allows the user to search by Town, Type of Establishment, Name, Postcode and distance from postcode, preferred star rating, and whether they have been awarded a Heart Beat Rating or not. The user is given results which also detail such info as contact address, telephone number and the date of the last inspection.

The CMS too we developed was delivered to seven Northamptonshire Councils, including the Borough Council of Wellingborough, Corby Borough Council, Daventry District Council, East Northamptonshire Council, Kettering Borough Council, South Northamptonshire Council and Northampton Borough Council. All of which can easily administer the data on a regular basis in real time.
