Pilsner (also known as pilsener or simply pils) is a type of pale lager as its known. It takes its name from the city of Pilsen (Plzeň), Bohemia, in the Czech Republic, where it was developed in the 19th century - this is where the original Pilsner Urquell beer is produced today.

This modern day Pilsener has a mostly light, clear colour from pale to very golden yellow, and a distinct hop aroma and flavour. Czech pilseners tend to lean towards a lighter flavour, while those in a German style largers can be more bitter or even "earthy" in flavour.
